What is Craniosacral Therapy


  • Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands on modality using light touch to release restrictions in the structures of the body that house the nervous system: head, face, jaw, neck, spine, sacrum and pelvis.

  • It is practiced while the client is fully clothed and seated or laying down.

  • The intention is to enhance the environment in which the nervous system functions in order to support the body's natural ability to regulate and heal itself.

  • Integrated with psychotherapy, this work strengthens the mind-body connection and helps ground the healing process in the body.

What are the benefits of Craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy can be beneficial for a multitude of issues. Some of the most common reasons people seek this work include:

How do you integrate Craniosacral therapy with Psychotherapy?

I work collaboratively with my clients, so this will be unique for each individual. Typically, we begin by getting to know each other and assessing whether this work would be beneficial for you. If we decide it would be, we will begin to weave it into our weekly therapy sessions. There is a space in my office where clients can lay or sit and receive this work fully clothed. Comfortable and loose fitting clothing is ideal.

So do I talk while I'm on the table?

This work is most beneficial when it is received in a mindful state. This means that I invite you to pay attention to your present experience and notice what is happening without assigning meaning or analysis (we can always do this later). In my experience, allowing the cognitive/analytical mind to take a break during this part of session allows the work to be the most impactful. 

Does it cost extra?

Nope! During our initial phone consultation, we will set a fee for session. This fee is for the length of session rather than the content, so there is no extra cost for including Craniosacral work. 

How do I know if it is right for me? 

This work may not be a good fit for everyone. If you are interested in this work, let's talk more about what you're wanting out of therapy and assess if it would support your unique therapeutic goals. 


What if I'm not comfortable with touch, do I have to receive this work if I am a therapy client? 

Everyone's relationship with touch is different, so you get to decide. You are welcome to receive this work often, infrequently, once, or never. It is an offering, not a requirement so it's totally up to you. There are many ways to explore the mind-body connection that do not involve touch.

Can I book a Craniosacral appointment if I am not a therapy client?

I have limited spaces available for "Craniosacral-only" clients. If you have been referred to me by your therapist or a friend, please reach out to me directly at emily@mindfulcenter.org to schedule a session. You may want to also check out my additional resources page for local practitioners. 

Is there any reason I shouldn't receive this work?

This work is safe and non-invasive. If a slight increase in intracranial pressure would cause instability in your body, this work would not be for you. Conditions where this may be relevant include: acute aneurism, very recent brain or spinal surgery, cerebral hemorrhage or other preexisting severe bleeding disorders. If you are concerned about receiving this work, please check with your doctor.
